Read all about it!

I am so excited about our first piece of press!  Today we were a feature article in the student newspaper of the University of Washington.

The article was accurate, with wonderful quotes from several different staff members.  The student writer really seemed to understand our philosophy and approach and made an effort to ensure the overall message of the article was one of information and education about the important work that is done in eating disorder treatment.

Free Eating Disorder Support Group

Opal is excited to be hosting a long standing resource in the Seattle community.

A free eating disorder support group has been offered in the University District since February 2000, originally lead by Julie Church, RD, CD and eventually co-lead with Kara Bazzi, LMFT.

Road to RecoverED is the new name of this group.  It was formerly named Liberate from Within.

Julie Church, Nutrition Director and Co-Founder of Opal: Food+Body Wisdom has been providing Seattle eating disorder resources for over a decade.  In 1999, right after she moved to Seattle, she began a free community eating disorder support group in the university district.  It has met weekly at University Presbyterian Church every since. Julie has ensured there has always been trained clinicians to volunteer their time to offer this much needed support to the Seattle community. In fact, Julie and Kara Bazzi (another Opal co-founder) co-lead the support group for 3 years together, their first opportunity of working alongside each other which led them to realize they had a long future of collegial collaboration!

Opal Hosting and Participating in National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

http://opalfoodandbody.com/events/

National Eating Disorders Awareness week has always been a week of great effort, emotion, and passion.  Kara, Lexi  and Julie have been involved with this awareness week in countless ways over the years.  Lectures, panel discussions, jeans giveaways, jump roping demos, and more.  The area universities have especially been home to these events.

Julie recalls raising thousands of dollars to bring Jean Kilbourne to Seattle Pacific University for what she called Respect Your Body Week.  This was so rewarding and such a
thrill to have an acclaimed voice regarding media’s impact on body image and self-esteem
speak to a campus eager to learn an alternative to their image focused culture.

This year Opal: Food+Body Wisdom will host events and participate in events throughout the region. With such a connection to the universities in the area it is no surprise that the staff will be speaking at University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University and Bastyr University. Opal will also be hosting its own forum on body image Monday February 27th at 6pm, along with collecting jeans as part of the Great Jeans Giveaway.

Here is the link to our complete list of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week events.  http://opalfoodandbody.com/events/  Come join us increase awareness around food and body concerns and ensure that eating disorders are talked about in a respectful, productive, and educational way.  We can make a difference!

Our logo

We were grateful to work with a fantastically creative mind in Lou Maxon, in creating our logo.  This image hopefully represents who we are and what kind of treatment we offer.  The logo is intentionally imperfect and sizable.  Opal will be a place that encourages clients and staff to live authentically, which of course means imperfectly.  Opal will be a place that embraces diversity and the differences that make life exciting.  Opal will also offer treatment that will encourage clients to come to peace with taking up space in their families, culture, and community.  As you follow this blog you will see these values spoken of by our staff and be linked to other helpful tools to living imperfect, authentic, and sizable lives.
